Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare Instructions

Please be aware that aftercare is under YOUR CONTROL and has a direct effect on the success of the healing and results of the laser treatment.  For optimal results, please adhere to the following guidelines:

1 Hour After Treatment

Skin Reactions:  Please note your treatment site may exhibit different tissue reactions after each treatment.

The following signs and symptoms are normal after tattoo removal:

  • The treatment site appears unchanged.
  • The area will appear white, pink and/or swollen.
  • The treatment site has pinpoint bleeding, blistering or red and yellow discharge.
  • None of the above mentioned reactions or lack thereof indicates the effectiveness of the treatment.

Rest and Elevated the treated area above the heart when possible.  This is especially important for arms/hands/legs/feet.

First 24 Hours After Treatment

  • Continue to apply ice compress as noted above
  • Apply Aloe Vera Gel as needed to decrease warmth, itchiness and irritation.

Continue to rest and elevate

  • Limit activities by taking it easy the evening of your treatment.  No excessive alcohol intake, dancing or exercise.  Please do not use steam rooms or hot tubs and avoid swimming (pools and ocean.)

24 Hours After Treatment Until Site Is Completely Healed

  • Moisturize: Keep treatment site well moisturized with Aloe-Cort cream, or ointments such as Aquaphor or Vaseline.
  • Activities:  You may resume all activates except swimming.  (Only if your skin is intact and completely healed, may you resume swimming.)
  • Blistering: BLISTERING IS NORMAL.  Do no “pop” blisters.  Blisters may take 1-2 weeks for the fluid to resolve.  You may use a non-stick bandage to protect the blister.  If blister breaks apply antibiotic ointment and a non-stick bandage.
  • Scabbing/Crusting: DO NOT pick or remove scabs or crust during the healing process. This is a leading cause of infection and can lead to scarring. Healing can take anywhere from 5-25 day.
  • If you experience any signs or symptoms of infection such as green drainage, excessive erythema (redness) or swelling, unusual pain, fever, foul smelling discharge or tenderness to site, contact our office at 714-968-7000

Before Your Next Laser Treatment

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds during healing process.  (Ok to tan, use self-tanner, or spray tan prior to treatments)
  • Apply a SPF 30 sunscreen or higher to any exposed treated area until the treatment area is completely healed.
  • A prescribed topical anesthetic may be applied 30-60 minutes prior to treatment.  Do not operate a motor vehicle while wearing the anesthetic.  Using numbing cream inappropriately or in a manner not recommended by the Comfort Laser’s medical staff may have serious side effect.  Do not use on any mucus membrane.
  • Follow all instructions given with your topical anesthetic carefully.
  • Please avoid taking aspirin, Motrin, Aleve or ibuprofen products prior to treatment.
  • Please notify us if you are on any antibiotics or other photosensitive medication.
  • Please notify us if you are on any antibiotics or other photosensitive medication.
  • The tattoo may appear foggy and begin its fading process over the next month.  It is not uncommon for the area to appear unchanged after the first few treatments.  Sessions are usually scheduled 4 or more weeks apart in order to allow maximum clearing per session and to ensure that the area treated has ample time to heal.

The full treatment process will take multiple treatments spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.  Upon consultation, your clinician will present a treatment plan for you as well as an evaluation of your individual response to the laser.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office.

If you still have concerns please call 888 682 9109 or email us and someone will respond very quickly.
